The food in Thai restaurants does not arrive in
order, such as appetizer, salad and then main dishes. So order what you want
to eat first, then order what you want next and so on. So remember if you
order the rice last, it will come last. It is okay to order as you eat.
- Check the bill for correctness and for the added service charge. Once you
are sure of the correct amount a tip (if no service charge was added) of
5-10% is appropriate.
- All restaurants serve alcohol, some allow you to bring your own bottles,
but may charge a corkage fee.
- Be patient. If you are eating in a Thai restaurant, the food can take some
time to arrive.
- Some Thai dishes can be very hot from the chili peppers. It would be wise
to ask for “mai phet” (or not spicy in English) until you know what you
like. If you bite on chili, let some sugar dissolve on your tongue, eat
cucumber slices or plain rice. Drinking water does not cool the heat of the
chilli.
- It is suggested to drink only bottled water. In a Restaurant they should bring you the bottle of water.
- Ice cubes are safe and you should not need to worry.
Street Vendors
Street vendors, food stalls and noodle
carts all cook tasty and inexpensive food. They are on every side road and
street corner. You can sit at one of their tables or have it packaged to
take home. Many food stalls do not have menus, so just point to the food or
memorize the names of some dishes. Go where you see Thai people eating, they
are not immune to food poisioning and usually know the best places to dine.
